IAM Serves the Karamajong Tribe

April 23, 2020 by Becky Miller

In February of 2020, IAM received an invitation to visit the Karamajong tribe in northeastern Uganda to train and teach God’s Word through the Creation to Christ book series.  The Karamajong, a unique ethnic tribe, are nomadic cattle herders living in poverty, underserved in education and health care. More importantly, they lack an understanding of who Jesus is and His love for them. IAM assembled a team of four men who made the 500 mile journey. Upon their arrival, the cultural and language differences were immediately apparent. However, they were welcomed by pastors and teachers eager for training. In the villages the children, youth and the elderly were captivated by the stories and illustrations.

After daily training sessions, the team and teachers went into the communities to practice story telling with the villagers. Apuuli and Dan reported, “These books are the perfect tool for teaching because of the prevalent illiteracy of the people. The illustrated Bible stories were excellent for teaching them about God and sparked their desire to learn and read English.”

Dan, who has been teaching this book series for 12 years, observed an excitement in the Karamajong’s reactions. He said, ” They were so attentive to the story telling and eager to touch the illustrations.” Dan overheard some exclaiming, “This is the Bible!  This is what Adam looked like!” Of course, Dan corrected these misconceptions, but was amazed at their curiosity and desire to learn.

One thing was evident to Dan and Apuuli. All ages were interested in hearing the stories, looking at the illustrations and holding the books in their own hands.

This 80 year old village chief, with a bone protruding through his chin, was drawn to the Bible story teaching in his village. Seated next to Dr. Dan, the chief repeatedly touched Dan’s arm because he had never before seen a real doctor.

It would be hard to measure who received the greater blessings, those who gave or those who received.  An invitation was extended to the team for a future trip, and plans are being made to return for more teaching. The next trip will also include a medical mission team to provide much needed medical attention.  Thank you to all our partners who contribute to IAM book ministry.  IAM’s cost for the trip was $450.00.
